In-Progress Cleaning:
1) Remove excess mortar.
2) Dry brush exposed masonry at the end of each workday.
3) Protect wall from mud splatter and mortar droppings.
a) Set scaffolds and scaffold boards so that mortar is not deflected onto masonry.
b) At end of each workday turn scaffold boards so that rainwater is not deflected onto the masonry.
4) Place units such that mortar does not run down the face of the wall or the face of the masonry.
5) Cover the tops of finished and unfinished walls at the end of each workday to keep water from entering the walls and creating efflorescence. Drape covering at least 2 feet down each side of wall.
6) Grout shall be prevented from flowing onto or otherwise staining faces of the masonry.
Masonry Cleaning:
After mortar has set, reached initial curing; within 7 days of completion of work for masonry, clean exposed masonry as follows:
1) Remove large mortar particles by hand with wooden paddles and non-metallic scrape hoes or chisels.
2) Cut out any defective mortar joints and holes and re-point with mortar.
3) Protect non-masonry surfaces and other architectural masonry surfaces from contact with cleaning solution by covering them with liquid strippable masking agent, polyethylene film, or waterproof masking tape.
a) Protection of other architectural masonry may be omitted if the cleaning procedures required herein are deemed by the manufacturer of the other architectural masonry units to be appropriate for cleaning such units.
4) Cleaning Solution: Clean Quik-Brik with Concrete Brick Cleaner - (manufactured by PROSOCO (800) 255-4255) diluted one part cleaning solution to not less than three parts water.
5) Cleaning Procedures:
NOTE: To assure desired cleaning results are achieved, test panels should be applied prior to full-scale cleaning. Test panels should be applied following the procedures and precautions outlined in the cleaning product manufacturer's product literature. It is recommended that a representative of the cleaning product manufacturer be present during test panel application for review and approval.
a) Always prewet surface with clean water. On vertical surfaces, keep lower areas wet to avoid streaks.
b) Apply the prediluted cleaning solution directly to surface using a masonry washing brush or low-pressure spray. Do not exceed 40 PSI when low pressure spray applying the prepared cleaning solution.
c) Let cleaner dwell for 3 - 5 minutes.
d) Reapply cleaner. Scrub or scrape areas of heavy soiling using wood blocks or nonmetallic scrapers.
e) Rinse thoroughly with fresh water. If pressure-rinsing equipment is not available, brush the surface while rinsing. If pressure rinsing equipment is used:
i) do not exceed nozzle pressure of 1000 (PSI)
ii) utilize fan spray tips of 40 degrees or larger - do not use zero tips, laser tips or rotating tips.
iii) Maintain a minimum water flow rate of 6 - 8 gallons per minute (GPM)
iv) Keep spray tip at least 8 inches from the face of the masonry
Note: Multiple applications may alter the surface texture or color of sensitive surfaces.
